Pets and GPS: Tracking Has Never Been Easier

Posted on 28th Nov 2011 @ 11:34 AM

Houdini, a lab-shepherd mix, was in foster care with Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. The dog pushed an air conditioner out of a window and fled. Fortunately the staff at Best Friends anticipated Houdini's wandering ways and had outfitted his collar with a GPS tracking device. Houdini was found with the use of the GPS.

GPS is a highly reliable and versatile system of monitoring your mobile assets. You can use a device to monitor your car, someone else’s car, or even a person, like a child or the elderly. Studies have shown that businesses which use GPS to monitor their companies’ vehicles have found reduced costs in gasoline because the drivers are not speeding, and therefore spending less gas. And less speeding also means fewer speeding tickets and litigation costs. Recently, there was a story about how all members of AAA with teenage drivers would be receiving a GPS device completely free of charge in order to monitor their young driver’s activity. And now, in this latest development, GPS can even be used to monitor our furry friends as well.

Houdini is a lab-Sheppard mix, named after the famous escape artist of the late 1800’s, lives up to his namesake. In his most recent and most daring escape, Houdini managed to push an air-conditioning unit out of the window before leaping through it and running away. The family struggled to find him; however, Kristi Littrell, manager of the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, where the family adopted Houdini, had a GPS device especially made into Houdini’s collar before giving him away. Once the device was activated, finding Houdini was easy. He was found, completely unharmed, in an empty lot with tall grass not far from his home.

Approximately 50% of the animals in adoption centers are lost pets or strays. However, with GPS technology becoming so advanced and cost-effective, many are turning to it to keep their pets safe. For example, it has become very common to have cats and dogs “micro-chipped;” That is, to have a micro-chip placed under the pets’ skin. The micro-chip is GPS enabled, so finding a lost pet is easy and hassle-free. Many of these GPS devices can even be monitored remotely through the use of a cell phone, which demonstrates how easy they can be to use.

"I never would have dreamed in my lifetime that there would come a day when I would get a text message for help from my pet," said Mike Arms, president of the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., who uses Tagg with his puppy Anchovy. Tagg is one of the most popular pet GPS devices available on the market today because it is extremely reliable and cost-effective. Also, it allows for remote viewing through your mobile phone.
